λ Leporis burns at 852 light-years, a blue B-class sun hidden beneath Orion's feet in the constellation of the Hare. It belongs to that generation of massive stars that light the spiral arms of the Galaxy and exhaust their fuel in mere tens of millions of years. When this light first departed, the Crusades had not yet begun and Europe had barely emerged from the first millennium.
Where it is and when to see it
Lambda Leporis lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
