Iota Leporis slips between the paws of the Hare, that small constellation fleeing at Orion's feet, forever stalked by the Greater Dog. It is a hot blue B-type star, compact and bright, sitting some 232 light-years away. Its cold light travelled for more than two centuries to reach the eye of the modern observer, having set out roughly when the Montgolfier brothers were trialling the first balloon flights and humanity was learning for the first time to leave the ground behind.
Where it is and when to see it
Iota Leporis lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
