What is HIP 24679
A yellow light, almost solar, perched on the hare fleeing beneath the feet of Orion. At 160 light-years, its flash departed around 1866, when the first permanent transatlantic telegraph cable was laid and Europe and America began speaking to each other in mere minutes. This star —Sun-like but somewhat older— is also transmitting its message, in light, after a century and a half of travel.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 24679 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
