Delta Caeli is a hot blue star 705 light-years away, one of the few beacons of a quiet, almost forgotten constellation: the Chisel, traced by Lacaille across the southern sky. Its B-type spectrum places it among the hottest stars in the visible sky, with a surface comfortably above 15,000 degrees and a lifespan measured in just a few hundred million years.
Where it is and when to see it
Delta Caelum lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
