What is Gamma 1 Caelum
Gamma-1 Caeli is an orange giant in the small constellation of the Chisel, added by French astronomer Lacaille in the 18th century to honour engravers. She is fourteen times the Sun's radius and pours out seventy times more light, despite being 1,300 degrees cooler. A yellow subgiant companion shares her sky. At 181 light-years she is a small, silent forge pointed towards the galactic south.
Where it is and when to see it
Gamma 1 Caelum lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
