What is HIP 20614

In Taurus, near the Hyades, hums a yellow-white star 165 light-years away. Its light set out as Marx and Engels were publishing the «Communist Manifesto» and a new political language was spreading through the streets of Europe. A class-F sun, hotter and more energetic than ours, it shines with a creamy white that stands out in one of the oldest open clusters visible to the naked eye, where the stars share a common origin.

HIP 20614 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
