What is 31 Tauri

31 Tauri is a blue B-type star, hot and luminous, set in the constellation of the Bull not far from the Hyades cluster. Its bluish tone reveals a surface at tens of thousands of degrees, far above that of the Sun. Its light crosses almost eight centuries of space before touching the mirror of any telescope.

Where it is and when to see it

31 Tauri lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
