18 Tauri belongs to the Pleiades, the open cluster long known in Mediterranean folklore as the Seven Sisters. It is a B8V star at around 13,700 K, radiating 160 times the Sun's luminosity, and it orbits surrounded by a debris disk —icy material at 137 astronomical units, detected through its infrared excess—. It is part of one of the youngest and best-studied clusters in the sky, 409 light-years away.
Where it is and when to see it
18 Tauri lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
