What is 10 Tauri

Just 45 light-years away, 10 Tauri is a cosmic neighbour: a yellow-white F-type dwarf burning a touch hotter and brighter than the Sun. Light that left it during the 1980s now arrives clean to modern catalogues such as Hipparcos. It grazes Taurus far from the Bull's gleaming eye, in a quiet corner of the northern winter sky.

Where it is and when to see it

10 Tauri lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November, when it culminates around midnight.

  • From London it culminates about 39° above the horizon.
  • From New York it culminates about 50° above the horizon.
  • From Sydney it culminates about 56° above the horizon.

It sits almost on the celestial equator, so it can be seen from nearly the whole planet.

It ranks no. 25 in brightness among the 144 stars of Taurus in our catalogue. To find it, start from Aldebaran, the brightest: it lies about 22° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).

The light you see today left it about 46 years ago.
