30 Persei is a hot blue B-type star in Perseus, the hero who beheaded Medusa and rescued Andromeda. At 731 light-years away, its surface comfortably exceeds twenty thousand kelvin: it gives off a blue-white light and so much ultraviolet radiation that it overturns any intuition shaped by the Sun. Its glow travels from the era when the gothic was only being born in the great cathedrals of the Île-de-France.
Where it is and when to see it
30 Persei lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
