50 Persei is a yellow-white F-type star kindled just 68 light-years away —practically a galactic neighbour—, within the constellation that recalls the hero who slew Medusa. Hotter and more luminous than the Sun, its glow shows subtle variations that modern photometric campaigns have charted in detail. The light entering the eyepiece tonight set out when the first space telescope was still an idea on paper.
Where it is and when to see it
50 Persei lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
