Variable starIts story
1 Persei is an eclipsing binary: two hot B-type stars orbiting each other in fewer than twenty-six days along a markedly eccentric path. Each time one passes in front of the other, their combined brightness dips briefly, and that periodic pulse is what marks it as variable. Its light crossed nearly thirteen hundred light-years to reach us, setting off when Christian and Muslim kingdoms were contesting the Iberian Peninsula.
