What is Rho 1 Eridani
Rho-1 Eridani is an orange red-clump giant on the horizontal branch of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram: it has exhausted its core hydrogen and is now fusing helium in its centre. At 324 light-years, in the immense serpentine of the river Eridanus crossing the southern sky, it belongs to a multiple system whose warm light has been travelling to us for centuries.
Where it is and when to see it
Rho 1 Eridani lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November, when it culminates around midnight.

- From New York it culminates about 42° above the horizon.
- From Sydney it culminates about 64° above the horizon.
It can be seen from anywhere south of 82° N.
It ranks no. 98 in brightness among the 129 stars of Eridanus in our catalogue. To find it, start from Achernar, the brightest: it lies about 52° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
