What is Rho 1 Eridani
Rho-1 Eridani is an orange red-clump giant on the horizontal branch of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram: it has exhausted its core hydrogen and is now fusing helium in its centre. At 324 light-years, in the immense serpentine of the river Eridanus crossing the southern sky, it belongs to a multiple system whose warm light has been travelling to us for centuries.
Where it is and when to see it
Rho 1 Eridani lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
