What is HIP 117722
In Aquarius, the water-bearer, an orange K-type star pulses at about 282 light-years. Its light set out around 1744, when Bach was still composing and the European Enlightenment was ordering knowledge into monumental encyclopedias. Cooler than the Sun and warmer in tone, it already belongs to the lineage of somewhat evolved stars, with a deep golden glow reminiscent of the tempered fire of a long, calm candle.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 117722 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
