What is Veritate

Veritate, 'truth' in Latin, was given its modern name in 2014 through a public naming campaign organised by the International Astronomical Union. It is a K-type orange giant lying in Andromeda, about 258 light-years away, and hosts at least one planet detected through radial-velocity measurements. The light arriving tonight set out around 1768, the year Captain Cook left on his first Pacific voyage.

Where it is and when to see it

Veritate lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it never sets and culminates about 78° up.
From New York it culminates about 89° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 17° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 51° S.

It ranks no. 40 in brightness among the 81 stars of Andromeda in our catalogue. To find it, start from Alpheratz, the brightest: it lies about 13° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).

The light you see today left it about 260 years ago.
