What is Homam

Homam is a hot blue star on the neck of Pegasus, its name drawn from an Arabic phrase associated with «the lucky horse». At 204 light-years, its blue-white light reaches us from a century when constellations were still learned from handwritten almanacs. Modest but unmistakable, it serves as a hinge between the great rectangle of Pegasus and the fainter stars marking the horse's head.

Where it is and when to see it

Homam lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September, when it culminates around midnight.

  • From New York it culminates about 60° above the horizon.
  • From Sydney it culminates about 45° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 79° S.
