Hot blue starIts story
2 Lacertae shines with the blue-white cast of a hot B-type star, 555 light-years inside the small zigzag of the Lizard, wedged between Cygnus, Andromeda and Cepheus. Its surface comfortably exceeds ten thousand degrees, enough to lend its light that cool sapphire tint that contrasts so sharply with neighbouring red giants. Lacerta was sketched by Hevelius in the 17th century to fill a gap among larger constellations.
