What is 1 Lacerta
1 Lacertae opens the Flamsteed catalogue for a late, quiet constellation —drawn by Hevelius in the 17th century between Cygnus and Andromeda. It is an orange K-type giant whose light, born more than six centuries ago, was already travelling when Europe was redrawing its star charts. At magnitude 4.1 it is barely a whisper to the naked eye, yet it presides over its corner of the autumn sky with an ancient, amber calm.
Where it is and when to see it
1 Lacerta lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
