Rho Aquarii
Hot blue starWhat is Rho Aquarii
Rho Aquarii is a distant blue-white giant, almost nine hundred light-years away in the body of the Water Bearer. Its surface tops ten thousand degrees and pours out intense ultraviolet radiation that ionises the surrounding gas. The visible light we now see set out when the Mosque of Córdoba, with its red and white arches, was being inaugurated in the heart of the Middle Ages.
Where it is and when to see it
Rho Aquarii lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
