47 Capricorni is an M-type variable red giant nearly 1,190 light-years away, one of the most distant stars in its constellation still reachable by the naked eye. Its slow pulsations make the brightness throb on scales of months, a common trait in evolved giants. The light we see today set out around the dawn of the 9th century.
Where it is and when to see it
47 Capricorni lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
