12 Pegasi is a luminous K-type star whose modest apparent brightness from Earth conceals a true power: at nearly fourteen hundred light-years, its light must cross an ocean of vacuum just to barely register on the human eye. It hangs from the great body of Pegasus, far from the Square, in a region only attentive observers know how to search. Its photons set out long before the first European printing press.
Where it is and when to see it
12 Pegasi lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
