What is 12 Pegasi

12 Pegasi is a luminous K-type star whose modest apparent brightness from Earth conceals a true power: at nearly fourteen hundred light-years, its light must cross an ocean of vacuum just to barely register on the human eye. It hangs from the great body of Pegasus, far from the Square, in a region only attentive observers know how to search. Its photons set out long before the first European printing press.

Where it is and when to see it

12 Pegasi lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August, when it culminates around midnight.

  • From London it culminates about 61° above the horizon.
  • From New York it culminates about 72° above the horizon.
  • From Sydney it culminates about 33° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 67° S.

It ranks no. 40 in brightness among the 98 stars of Pegasus in our catalogue. To find it, start from Enif, the brightest: it lies about 13° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).

The light you see today left it about 1,400 years ago.
