What is HIP 104738
In Microscopium —a modern constellation devised by the abbé La Caille in the eighteenth century— shines a yellow-white F-type star, somewhat hotter than the Sun. Its light has been travelling barely one hundred seven years: it set out as the aircraft of the Great War began crossing European skies and radio was still a recent miracle. It is the light of an almost contemporary cosmos, dispatched when the grandparents of those who watch it today were already alive.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 104738 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
