Variable starIts story
θ¹ Microscopii is a white star with subtle variations in brightness, resident of the Microscope, one of the modern constellations invented by the abbé Lacaille in the 18th century during his expedition to the Cape of Good Hope. Lacaille drew scientific instruments there —compass, telescope, reticle— which still populate the southern sky today. θ¹ is a small, discreet flame in that celestial cabinet of the Enlightenment.
