What is 24 Capricorni
24 Capricorni burns amber at 456 light-years, a K-type orange giant that has long left its blue youth behind. Its slow light tints the silhouette of the Sea-Goat, a zodiacal constellation the Babylonians linked to the winter solstice. Every photon arriving here departed before the first modern star catalogues were printed.
Where it is and when to see it
24 Capricorni lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
