What is 39 Cygni

39 Cygni rests along the wing-arm of the Swan, the long cross that rides the summer Milky Way. It is an orange K-type giant —cool, eye-friendly, the colour of glowing copper— sitting some 250 light-years away. Its light set out in the early 1700s, while Flamsteed was still revising his catalogues, and arrives now with the patient hue of embers that refuse to fade.

39 Cygni lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
