What is 33 Cygni

33 Cygni drifts along the plane of the Milky Way as a white A-type candle some 159 light-years away. It glows near the neck of the Swan, in a region crossed by the dark dust lane of the Great Rift that splits the galaxy in two. Its cold, mineral light traveled for a century and a half before meeting any earthly gaze.

Where it is and when to see it

33 Cygni lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September, when it culminates around midnight.

  • From London it never sets and culminates about 85° up.
  • From New York it never sets and culminates about 74° up.
  • From Sydney it never rises above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 33° S.
