What is 64 Draco

64 Draconis is a very cool red giant embedded in the immense body of Draco, that boreal circumpolar constellation coiled around the north celestial pole. Its surface does not reach 4,000 kelvin and, at 588 light-years away, it gives off the deep red of stars approaching their final stretch. The light crossing the atmosphere tonight left its photosphere while European navigators were not yet dreaming of rounding the Cape of Good Hope.

Where it is and when to see it

64 Draco lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it never sets and culminates about 77° up.
From New York it never sets and culminates about 66° up.
From Sydney it never rises above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 25° S.

It ranks no. 53 in brightness among the 122 stars of Draco in our catalogue. To find it, start from Eltanin, the brightest: it lies about 21° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
