What is 26 Draco

26 Draconis is a cosmic neighbour: just 46 light-years off, it forms a hierarchical triple system. Its two main components are a spectroscopic binary of types F9 and K3 with a 76-year orbital period, accompanied at greater distance by a third red dwarf of class M0.5. Component A runs slightly hotter and brighter than the Sun. An almost familiar system, where three suns pursue one another in the silent dance of the Dragon.

Where it is and when to see it

26 Draco lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it never sets and culminates about 80° up.
From New York it never sets and culminates about 69° up.
From Sydney it never rises above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 28° S.

It ranks no. 55 in brightness among the 122 stars of Draco in our catalogue. To find it, start from Eltanin, the brightest: it lies about 11° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
