In the small southern constellation of Telescopium, a red giant burns with the coppery light of exhausted stars. Its journey toward us began around the year 700, at the height of the Umayyad caliphate's expansion across the Mediterranean. Much larger and far cooler than the Sun, it has already consumed nearly all its nuclear fuel and exhales slow envelopes into the void.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 97598 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
