What is HIP 97499

In Aquila —the eagle that bears Zeus's thunderbolt— shines an orange K-type star. Its light has been on its way some three hundred fifteen years: it set out as the kingdoms of Spain and Scotland were transforming —Philip V launching the Bourbon dynasty, the Acts of Union founding the United Kingdom. Cooler and more golden than the Sun, it glows in a most serene copper tone. An early eighteenth-century ember on the eagle's wing, still crossing the void.

Where it is and when to see it

HIP 97499 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
