This red light left Cygnus around the year 1456, when Gutenberg was finishing the 42-line Bible and Constantinople had fallen to the Ottomans just three years earlier. It is an M-type star, cool and reddish, at an advanced stage of its stellar life. The Swan —with its arms spread across the Milky Way— is for many the most elegant silhouette of the northern summer sky.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 97081 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
