In Cygnus, beside the great luminous river of the summer Milky Way, blazes a blue-white B-class star whose light has been travelling for over thirteen hundred years: it set out when the Visigothic kingdoms were yielding ground to the Muslim expansion in the Iberian Peninsula. Hot and luminous, it radiates an icy, almost violet glow. It is a young, massive, short-lived star that shines above its class in a field of the sky where almost every light has a story.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 100574 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
