In the plumage of the Swan pulses an orange giant of changing brightness, 232 light-years away. Its light departed around 1794, when the Chappe brothers were inaugurating in France the world's first optical telegraph network. K-type variables are aged hearts: they breathe slowly because their outer layers swell and cool in months-long cycles.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 94013 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is August: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
