A white A-type star pulses softly in Sagittarius, toward the very heart of the Milky Way. Hotter and more luminous than the Sun, it wavers with a slow rhythm only instruments can detect. Its light set out some four centuries ago, when Kepler was formulating his laws of planetary motion and the heavens were turning from divine mystery into precise machinery. After 423 light-years, that throbbing glow arrives as a heartbeat faithful to the science that learned to count what orbits.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 96234 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
