Some 1699 light-years away, in the heart of Sagittarius, shines a highly luminous orange class K star. Its light set out around the year 326, when emperor Constantine, freshly converted to Christianity, was beginning to lay the foundations of Constantinople. Cooler than the Sun yet vastly larger, its glow arrives after nearly seventeen centuries crossing the dense stellar regions that hide the heart of our galaxy.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 94434 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
