What is Okab

Okab means «eagle» in Arabic and is one of the stars tracing the wings of Aquila, the constellation that crosses the summer Milky Way. It is a white star 83 light-years away, young and fast-spinning. Its light, arriving tonight after about a century of travel, follows the very route it was already following when telescopes were just beginning to multiply the known universe.

Where it is and when to see it

Okab lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 52° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 63° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 42° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 76° S.
