Alshain accompanies Altair in the celestial Eagle and shares its closeness: only 44 light years separate us from this yellow G-class star. Its name comes from a Persian original, «shahin tarazu», the balancing falcon, that symbolically weighed the bird alongside its two companions. It is a temperate sister of the Sun, near enough to feature on any map of stellar neighbourhoods.
Where it is and when to see it
Alshain lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
