64 Serpentis is a hot blue B-type star about 1,137 light-years away, in the winding body of Serpens —the only constellation split into two separate parts. Its bluish-white tone reveals a surface above ten thousand degrees, typical of the most energetic stars. The light we receive tonight set out when the Song dynasty still ruled China, long before the printing press of the modern age.
Where it is and when to see it
64 Serpens lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
