In the Serpent burns a blue star of clean fire. Its light crossed some four hundred years before reaching us: it set out around 1624, when Richelieu became First Minister of France and the Dutch founded New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island. Its surface seethes at temperatures that dwarf the Sun, and its lavender hue cuts the sky like a blade.

HIP 86019 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
