Nunki guides Sagittarius's arrow towards the heart of the Milky Way, in one of the densest regions of the summer sky. Its name comes from Sumerian, recovered from Mesopotamian tablets that named it more than three millennia ago. At 228 light-years away, this blue star is an ancient beacon in the most literal sense: the light arriving now departed in the midst of the Enlightenment.
Where it is and when to see it
Nunki lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
