What is Kaus Media

Kaus Media, «the middle of the bow» in mingled Latin and Arabic, marks the central section of the bow Sagittarius draws toward the heart of the Milky Way. An orange K-class giant 347 light years away, its warm hue stands out against the bright background of the galactic centre. Its light departed not long before Cervantes finished Don Quixote.

Where it is and when to see it

Kaus Media lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
