Albaldah shines in Sagittarius, its name from the Arabic «al-baldah», «the town» or «the district» — a reference to one of the ancient lunar mansions. A luminous F-class supergiant about 510 light-years away, it is a huge and powerful star whose light, gentled by distance, looks like a lamp burning on some far-off street. That light began its journey roughly when Columbus was crossing the Atlantic.
Where it is and when to see it
Albaldah lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
