33 Sagittarii is a luminous yellow G-type star roughly 1,639 light-years away, in a stretch of Sagittarius rich in clusters and nebulae crossed by the Milky Way. Although its spectral class recalls the Sun, its luminosity and distance reveal a much larger, far more evolved body. The light arriving tonight set out in the heart of the Middle Ages, before the printing press was invented and many European universities had even been founded.
Where it is and when to see it
33 Sagittarii lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is July: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
