What is 3 Persei
3 Persei is an orange K-type star 245 light-years away, in the northwestern edge of Perseus where the constellation drifts away from the luminous trail of the Milky Way. It glows at magnitude 5.7 —to the unaided eye, a whisper of light that only emerges under truly dark skies—. Its warm hue contrasts with the blue giants that dominate the mythic hero's shoulders toward the east.
Where it is and when to see it
3 Persei lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
