Almost three thousand light-years separate us from this variable giant tucked into Scutum, the Polish shield. Its light set out around the 9th century BC, when Rome did not yet exist and Homer was perhaps still composing his verses. K-type, deep orange, with an internal pulse that makes its brightness tremble across the years. Few stars in the catalogue travel so long to arrive so faint.

HIP 90913 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky.
