What is Nu Ophiuchi
Nu Ophiuchi is an orange K-type giant about 150 light-years away, set within the vast body of the Serpent Bearer. Long-term radial-velocity surveys have uncovered substellar companions of very high mass orbiting it —drifting along the blurred frontier between giant exoplanet and brown dwarf—, making it a rare laboratory for the formation of massive worlds around aging suns.
Where it is and when to see it
Nu Ophiuchi lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
