What is HIP 87569
In the Scorpion's sting, 823 light-years away, lives an orange type-K star whose light departed in the heart of the Middle Ages, when the Crusades were redrawing the map of the Mediterranean. It is an ancient giant: cooler than the Sun yet swollen to enormous diameters, which lets it pour the light of many suns into space. Its amber tone is that of tempered metal, a noble ember holding its glow with the calm of old stars.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 87569 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
