What is 4 Scorpii
4 Scorpii shines in one of the most imposing constellations of the zodiac, that scorpion whose curved stinger rests on the southern band of the Milky Way. It is a white A-type star some 408 light-years away, hotter and more luminous than the Sun, with the crisp paleness typical of its class. Its light began its journey around 1618, as the Thirty Years' War was erupting across Europe.
Where it is and when to see it
4 Scorpii lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is May: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
