What is Gamma Ophiuchi
Gamma Ophiuchi is a white type A star lying just 103 light-years away, on the flank of the Serpent-Bearer. Its sharp, almost unshaded light reveals a youthful surface, pure hydrogen burning with apparent calm. Surveys of its surroundings have uncovered a faint dust disc, a frozen relic reminiscent of our own Kuiper Belt, where unseen bodies may quietly trace their orbits.

Gamma Ophiuchi lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is June: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
